Counseling Services - ADD / ADHD Evaluation and Assessment Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADD) & Attention-Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD) Attention-Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD) is characterized by inappropriate degrees of inattention, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity. Children with ADHD have short attention spans, have difficulty remembering and carrying out directions and have difficulty remaining still and / or quiet for long periods of time. These children may act impulsively, interrupt frequently, fail to complete tasks and lose homework and/or other important information. What causes this disorder? There are a number of factors that can predispose a child to ADHD. Research has indicated that a chemical imbalance in the brain can be responsible. There is a tendency for genetic inheritance. Certain injuries to the brain can also contribute to the disorder. How are parents of ADHD children likely to feel? Many times the parents feel like failures. They feel frustrated, confused, and angry much of the time. Other adults may not understand. Research indicates that parenting an ADHD child can be as difficult as parenting a handicapped or disabled child. These parents need information and support to cope. Can this disorder be treated through counseling and therapy? Effective treatment will involve a team effort between the parents, the therapist, the child's physician, and the child's teachers. Information from adults in frequent contact with the child will be crucial in making the diagnosis (in addition to other assessment methods). Medications may be needed, as well. Are these children low achievers? Most of these children will achieve below their intellectual capacity due to the related symptoms described earlier. This does not mean, however, that these children have lower IQ's. ADHD occurs along all intellectual levels and many of these children have above average IQ levels. Counseling is a strong component to help ADD/ADHD patients to work through difficulties, problems of focusing and educational assistance. Is this a lifelong disorder? The symptoms usually decrease as the child reaches maturity. Some symptoms may continue through adulthood. There can be secondary disorders such as depression, feelings of inadequacy, and/or low self-esteem. These can be diagnosed and treated, as well. Champion Christian Counseling Center provides ADD/ADHD teasting and evaluation for children, adoloscents and adults.
