Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADD) & Attention-Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD)
There are a number of factors that can predispose a child to ADHD. Research has indicated that a chemical imbalance in the brain can be responsible. There is a tendency for genetic inheritance. Certain injuries to the brain can also contribute to the disorder. How are parents of ADHD children likely to feel? Many times the parents feel like failures. They feel frustrated, confused, and angry much of the time. Other adults may not understand. Research indicates that parenting an ADHD child can be as difficult as parenting a handicapped or disabled child. These parents need information and support to cope. Effective treatment will involve a team effort between the parents, the therapist, the child's physician, and the child's teachers. Information from adults in frequent contact with the child will be crucial in making the diagnosis (in addition to other assessment methods). Medications may be needed, as well.
