Alzheimer's Disease for the Care Giver

A diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease can be devastating for family members. According to the National Caregiving Foundation the following are a list of symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. If a person has some of the symptoms it doesn't necessarily constitute a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, however, one should be examined by a physician if a number of these are present.

• Does your loved one forget what happened a minute ago or not understand what's taking place right at the moment?
• Does he seem disoriented with respect to time?
• Do familiar objects often strike the person as unfamiliar?
• Is he often unable to complete a sentence, or does he have a tendency to run fragments of thoughts one after another in random order?
  • Example: "I know that if I ... It's a matter of time and place ... you must see that he cannot be my son, my father ... not without the suit coat ... it's chilly where ... been outside?
• Has he often ignored or grossly misinterpreted written instructions you leave for him?
