Anger
...Continued
What are the steps to regaining
control of anger or preventing it in the future?
- Count to ten (10) before
expressing the anger.
- Identify the feelings that led
to the angry response.
- Evaluate the situation to determine
if the response was rational (based on facts) or irrational (based
on assumptions or exaggerated facts).
- Write as much as you can about the
situation while you are feeling angry. (This can help identify underlying
feelings that led to the anger).
- Check with others after anger has
subsided to determine if your facts are real or exaggerated.
- Discuss your feelings in a calm
manner.
- Brainstorm possible solutions to
the problem.
- Choose one to try.
- Give yourself permission to have
and express feelings.
- Enjoy the rewards of handling anger
appropriately (i.e. improved relationships, feelings of empowerment,
increased problem solving skills, reduced fear, etc.).
