Battered Women Syndrome
Why do women remain in abusive situations? Fear, denial of severity of problem, low self-esteem, inability to identify other options, inappropriate sense of loyalty toward the abuser or feelings of pity for him, false belief that things will change, depression to the point of helplessness and hopelessness, fear of financial loss of support, etc. Are certain women more likely to enter into abusive relationships or remain in them? Women who have grown up in abusive or addictive households are more likely to enter into or stay in these relationships. As dysfunctional and harmful as the abuse is, it is more comfortable than a normal relationship because it is more familiar. These women may have been brainwashed into believing that they deserve abusive treatment. They may have a distorted view of what a loving relationship is like. How can a battered woman seek help? The most important thing is the safety of the woman and her children. Most communities have safe houses for immediate help. Trained professionals can help in working through the feelings that have resulted from abuse. They can also assist in developing short-term and long-term plans for remaining safe.
