Is therapy helpful in determining abuse?

A qualified therapist with experience in child sexual abuse has many other ways of determining abuse, play therapy, interviewing techniques, testing, etc. Examination by a physician may be helpful as well. the therapist can also assist the parents in developing a plan to prevent further abuse of the child.

How do parents cope with the knowledge that their child has been abused?

Many parents feel guilty, inadequate or neglectful for not being aware earlier. They may experience feelings of shock, anger, loss, fear, and can experience depressive symptoms. Parents and / or care givers need qualified professionals to help them cope with their feelings as well as to develop plans for the future to protect the child.

Suspected abuse may be reported to the local Department of Human Resources or 1-800-4AChild (The Child Help USA Hotline).
