Grief & Loss

What can I do about my Anger?

  • Say the first sentence of the Serenity Prayer. "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change."
  • Anger is a feeling. Like all feelings, anger is okay. Anger is natural (if we are human, we are angry), healthy (if we are alive, we are angry), and non-evil (if we are normal, we react with anger).
  • Acting out anger is a behavior. We are all responsible for our behaviors, so anger is not an excuse for irresponsible acts of violence.
  • My anger is my own. No other person can “make” me angry.
  • Get to know my triggers. If I know my own buttons, I can learn to control my reactions.
  • Don’t stay in situations where I know I get angry. Take a time-out.
  • Talk about my feelings. When others understand you, they can accept and support you.
  • Avoid justifying my anger. Remember -- self-righteous anger is a killer.
  • State my feelings clearly. Use “I” messages: “I’m angry when you track grass in the house.”
  • Develop coping skills. Use relaxation, physical exercise, deep breathing, time-outs and affirmations.
  • Practice assertively expressing anger. "I am frustrated when … I am aggravated when … I am mad when … I am at the end of my rope when … I am angry when … ."
  • Pray. The Serenity Prayer helps both external resolution and internal resolution.
