Separation Anxiety Disorder
Are these characteristics normal at some childhood stages? Children experience some of these symptoms throughout childhood. These are usually passing phases. They can be related to changes in the child's life that require a period of adjustment. How can parents distinguish normal fears from Separation Anxiety? If the fear is short in duration or in reaction to a recent change in the child's life, it is probably normal. If the fears are extreme, consistent, or recurrent, it can indicate a more complex disorder. It may require a trained professional to make the distinction.
