What are the signs of teenage drug abuse?

Some of these are:

• Changes in behavior becoming more irritable
• Aggressive
• Argumentative or withdrawn
• Decline in school or grades
• Physical violence or destruction of property
• Hanging around with friends who drink or use
• Stealing
• Possession of alcohol, drugs, or drug paraphernalia, etc.

Could these problems have other causes?

Some symptoms are similar to other disorders and some of the minor changes can be due to normal teenage stages. Depression or anxiety can be a cause of some symptoms and may occur as a result of continued use by the teenager.

How can adults determine what is being used, how often, or how much?

The teenager will not usually come forward and admit use or the extent of the abuse. Drug testing and assessment by a trained professional is usually necessary.
