How is the family affected?

It is important to remember that drug and alcohol abuse and the related problems affect not only the user but the family, as well. Therefore, it is essential that parents or other caretakers learn as much as they can about the problem in order to deal with their own feelings. There are support groups available for the user and the family. A trained professional can give you information on groups in your area. Most areas list these groups in the newspaper, as well, and will have information on meeting days, times, and locations.

Can abuse be treated without hospitalization?

This depends on a number of factors:

• The types of drugs used.
• The length of time of use.
• The willingness for treatment.
• The amount of family support, etc.

Your doctor or therapist can assist you in determining the most effective treatment.
